Set in a beautiful park with a view over Kolding Fjord is Trapholt, a museum of modern art and design. Here you can spend hours immersing yourself in the spectacular paintings, sculptures and furniture exhibits. The museum plays host to a sculpture park with works by Danish artists as well as a large Richard Mortensen exhibition. The museum is also home to Denmark’s largest collection of more than 500 chairs from the 20th century. If you have previously visited Trapholt, you can enjoy the new collections amongst their temporary exhibitions.
Arne Jacobsen’s summer house
One of the museum’s permanent exhibitions is a unique and intriguing attraction. Most people find this exhibition of genuine interest, but it is particularly popular with those with a passion for design and architecture. We are talking about Arne Jacobsen’s prototype Kubeflex summer house, which was designed in cooperation with Høm Typehuse in 1969-70.
The summer house consists of cube-shaped units of 10 square meters. The idea behind the units was to create a flexible system in which the units could easily be combined as desired and added individually when needed. The concept for Kubeflex was to give its owner the opportunity to change their house according to their needs. Unfortunately, the 1970s was not ready for such an ambitious living arrangement, so the design was never put into production.
However, you can now experience this unique attraction, which is available to the public at Trapholt museum. Trapholt has additionally furnished the summer house with Arne Jacobsen designer furniture.
YOUR exhibition
You can actively participate in the preparation and design of the museum’s annual exhibitions. Trapholt gives you the opportunity of composing your very own exhibition using artworks from the museum’s collection. Usually, the academic staff curates the exhibitions by taking art historic themes as starting points, but four times a year Trapholt examines proposals made by the public and selects their favorite composition. You can choose freely from their large collection and how you would want to arrange the items, for example according to a certain colour, theme, time period or something completely different. You are free to decide!
