The New Carlsberg Glyptotek was, as the name reveals, established by the brewer Carl Jacobsen, that founded one of Denmark’s largest brands, Carlsberg. Jacobsen was a great art enthusiast, and with the fortune from his brewing enterprise, he could safely collect all the works of art he wished for. Amongst others in that collection, was The Little Mermaid. He chose to donate the entire collection to the public, and to be able to show all the art in one place, the Glyptotek was built. A small part of the collection is in the sculpture garden of Visit Carlsberg.
Big exhibitions in beautiful surroundings
The Glyptotek opened it’s doors in 1897 and has today, more than 10.000 works of art. These extend from ancient to modern times and also take you on a trip around the world. It all begins in the ancient Mediterranean culture and from the Middle East all the way to the Roman empire. The Glyptotek presents everything from world known Greek and Roman sculptures, to Egyptian mummies and burial artifacts. Moving forward in time, one can experience the Danish Golden Age with artists like Eckersberg, Freund and Bissen. It is also home to the largest collection of French art in Denmark, with for example Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Roding and Picasso.
Excluding the permanent exhibitions, that are all very impressive, you can several times a year experience new temporary exhibitions as well as events, concerts and guided tours. One should also mention that though a lot of people visit The Glyptotek because of the collection, a lot of people also visit because of the museums’ very beautiful architecture. Keep up with the museums events with their calendar.
